Nutrients for reducing pain and inflammation

Research has found that nutritional strategies can be used to improve pain management, limit inflammation and improve overall wellbeing.

When visiting a physician at 3Ways it is more than likely that you have walked away with a shopping list recommending some foods and supplements that will benefit and speed up improvements. And while every patient is different there are two common things that we direct patients to use. These are Omega 3 and Vitamin D supplements.

Omega 3

Omega 3 is an essential fatty nutrient that is required for health and protection from sickness.

It primarily comes from flax, fish or wild game meat, however it is commonly under consumed. Mixed with the other essential fatty acid (Omega 6) the key to their relationship is balance. Currently, there is an overabundance of Omega 6 and a scarcity of Omega 3 in the average diet.

Omega 3 plays a vital role in virtually all aspects of general human function and growth, contributing significantly to developmental, functional and even behavioural aspects. While the deficiency of Omega 3 is not the cause of illness, it certainly compromises health and is a significant contributing factor.

Research has found that Omega 3 is vital in the restoration of health and prevention of disease. This is because Omega 3 forms a part of every cell, making them ‘slippery’ enough to channel blood through vessels and ensure cells get the proper nutrients and hormones they need.

The role of Omega 3 doesn’t end there! In fact, they are required to transmit nerve signals used in memory, concentration, muscle coordination, strength and other cognitive abilities.

Unfortunately, with the lack of Omega 3 in the average diet, and the prevalence of Omega 6, this is creating a pro inflammatory state in the body that is the root of many common illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, depression, arthritis, irritable bowel and more.

Vitamin D

The effects of Vitamin D supplements on the immune system and influenza have only recently been documented .  Yet the positive outcomes that taking this vitamin can do for your immune system are significant!

The use of Vitamin D supplements has been demonstrated to help prevent the onset of influenza, especially in children, by enhancing antimicrobial peptides in the body that help reduce infection and reduce inflammation.

While not 100% effective in fighting off the common cold and flu, taking Vitamin D can still reduce the symptoms of those who are unlucky enough to contract it. This includes a reduction in the secretion of a vital protein (cytokine) needed for the immune system.

Research has also found that the use of Vitamin D supplements amongst people with asthma also reduces the incidence of asthma attacks,
