We’ve all heard the expression ‘you are what you eat’, but what if you eat well and your body doesn’t digest the food properly?
Follow these simple daily tips to help get the best out of your bowel.
1 – Stress less – Our bodies are designed to either be in a state of ‘fight and flight’ or ‘rest and digest’, we can’t be in both at the same at the same time.
If you are eating on the run or stressed when consuming food, your body will most likely be in ‘fight or flight’ category, making it harder to digest foods.
Try taking a few deep breaths before eating and chewing your food to the consistency of baby food before swallowing.
2 – Eat bitter foods – Having some rocquette, radish and kale or a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar before you eat, will help to raise stomach acids and digestive enzymes. Making it easier for your stomach to break down all that food.
3 – Eat Fibre rich food. Think leek, asparagus, oats, bananas and artichoke. We all know that fibre helps to keep us regular, but did you know that fibre also helps to feed those good bacteria associated with pro-biotics?
4 – Regular exercise – If you have troubles with constipation, a 20-minute walk or yoga class can help move things along. Constipation is often caused by stress, so taking some time out to do exercise you’re your favourite music can be a great way unwind.
5 – Detox – Give you digestive tract a break one day a week by avoiding things that may cause inflammation, like coffee, processed sugars, smoking, refined carbohydrates and saturated fats. Also drink plenty of water to help flush through toxins.
